personal story
I am Stevie Blum, a licensed psychotherapist and relationship specialist who has received top therapeutic training and continues to train as a lifelong learner.
While attending Columbia University’s School of Social Work, I studied Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I was drawn to the tangible skills DBT offered and the fact that the relationship between therapist and client is considered to be a real relationship between equals.
I learned the value of bringing my authentic self into the room, to help create a collaborative and non-judgemental space for clients. It was refreshing to break through some of the more outdated stereotypes of a therapist as a passive listener, asking “how do you feel about that?” over & over again.
tangible skills & tools
So many of my clients come to me frustrated, sharing that after years and years of therapy, they know why they do certain things...but they don't know what to do with that understanding.
My approach is the antidote to that. I offer concrete tools to help you tolerate distress, manage your emotions, and communicate more effectively.
relationship work
As my career progressed, I noticed that most of what causes people suffering revolves around the quality of the relationships in their lives. I pursued post-graduate training at the Ackerman Institute for the Family.
Ackerman taught me how to build meaningful connections between what we learned about relationships growing up (i.e how to fight, how to express love, etc.) and how we show up to relationships today. I developed skills in working with couples and families to improve their overall dynamic and understanding of one another.
“The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives.”
My extensive and advanced training has allowed me to develop the integrative and dynamic approach to therapy I have today.
MY APPROACH
thought restructuring
Many of us fall victim to black-and-white / all-or-nothing thinking. For example, you may think you are either always right or the world's biggest failure. When we ignore the nuances in everyone and everything, we limit ourselves unnecessarily.
The truth is that no one is either all good or all bad and we often experience many conflicting emotions at once. Challenging this rigid way of viewing the world allows us to examine ourselves and others with more curiosity and compassion.
Once we accept ourselves and reality as it is, we can change the things that do not serve us.
self-examination
My role is to help you create your personal operating manual.
Who are you? What are your values? What are your vulnerabilities? How do you function best? With whom do you feel your best? Together, we will remove the mental clutter preventing you from living your best and most authentic life.

“In the black, there is some white, in the wrong, there is some right, in the dark, there is some light, in the blind, there is some sight.”
